Tagesspiegel Background reports about H2-Atlas Africa project

There is great interest in green hydrogen. Not surprisingly, since hydrogen electrolyzed from renewable energy offers numerous solutions to the challenges of the energy transition. Accordingly, there is also great interest in the H2-Atlas Africa project, which started in spring 2021. Now Tagesspiegel Background reports on the project.

Green hydrogen has many benefits. The energy carrier can be transported over long distances to be made available across national borders or simply be stored. Unlike battery-based storage, green hydrogen maintains its energy value without loss even after a long time. In addition, its applications are very diverse. It can be used as a fuel in the tanks of airplanes, ships or cars, as well as in industry or at home. However, the precondition is that the hydrogen is produced from renewable energies and thus emission-free.

The H2 Atlas Africa project is investigating possibilities for establishing a hydrogen infrastructure in West and Southern Africa. In addition to the development of volatile energy sources, electrolysers are to be used in the future to convert the surplus electricity generated in this way into green hydrogen. To this end, a potential atlas is being created that shows the conditions in the individual countries and their potential for the production of green hydrogen.
